Stream of Consciousness Sunday: Moved by lyrics.
This morning I opened up Facebook and one of the first posts I saw was from a high school friend. She had linked to video of Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam) singing Black. This got me on a music/Eddie Vedder/ U2 (my favorite band) kick. See, music has always been a large part of my life. I’d lock myself in my room and listen to the same songs over and over again until I had every lyric memorized. U2 I hold especially dear to me, as they did a lot of hand holding during my teenage years. Seriously, they got me through that crazy time of adolescence. Anyway, I’ve always really listened to lyrics, some songs are more relatable than others. One of my favorites I came across this morning is Society by Eddie Vedder, pull it up if you’ve never heard it. Also by Eddie Vedder, Breathe. I’m leaving you with the lyrics, very moving!
Just Breathe Lyrics:
Yes I understand that every life must end, aw huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, aw huh
I’m a lucky man to count on both hands
The ones I love
Some folks just have one,
Others they got none, aw huh
Stay with me
Let’s just breathe.
Practiced are my sins,
Never gonna let me win, aw huh
Under everything, just another human being, aw huh
Yeh, I don’t wanna hurt, there’s so much in this world
To make me bleed.
Stay with me
You’re all I see.
Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean
I wonder everyday
as I look upon your face, aw huh
Everything you gave
And nothing you would take, aw huh
Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Did I say that I need you?
Oh, Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see
No one know this more than me.
As I come clean
Nothing you would take everything you gave.
Hold me till I die
Meet you on the other side

U2
I’m a U2 junkie! Yes, there have been years that they fell off my list of priorities while having kids and raising them, etc, but I’ve still managed to see them in concert 10 times since my first time in December of 1987! I still remember that show. We lived north of Orlando, the show was at the Tampa stadium. My dad was with me and my girlfriend Andrea, we had nosebleed seats to the right back of the stadium, so Bono was an ant. To this day I get chills at a show when they play “Where the Streets Have No Name”, because that was the opening song on that tour, The Joshua Tree Tour. The back drop glowed red, Larry came in with the drums, the guitars joined in and then Bono’s silhouette walked out, him in a cowboy hat. It was amazing! I’ll never forget it. Back then the whole stadium full of people would walk all the way to their cars, after the show, singing the lines to “40″, “I will sing, sing a new song”, over and over again – like magic.
Wednesday night in Miami, I saw show number 10. The 2nd now on their 360 Tour. The stage has come a long way since the Joshua Tree. Huge rocket ship contraption, total spectacle, incredible production! They are still the most amazing entertainers having upwards of like 75,000 people in attendance. Incredible! We had field tickets and managed to be about 5 people back at the catwalk, right where the bridge ended on several occasions, (it’s a moving bridge). We all went into a tizzy when Bono AND The Edge stopped right in front of us for about two whole minutes! Sigh!
Once again a magical experience. Counting the days until the next album and tour. Not too far off actually! The kids will go with us next time, Gavin is really into music and was bummed not to see it last night, but we couldn’t get seat tickets and the field is not the place for them yet.
I have many U2 stories to share in the future, I love to talk about them:-)!

The power of a song.
Don’t you just love how hearing a certain song can throw you in the midst of another time or immediately remind you of a person or place? Not unlike smells, songs can transport us to places in our past. As long as I can remember, music has been a big part of my life. I used to sit in my bedroom in my pre-teen years and play and rewind and play and rewind tapes over and over again until I knew every lyric. I specifically remember doing this with every U2 album that existed then, ha. Music still moves me today. The solo album “Into the Wild” by Eddie Vedder never fails to bring tears to my eyes. The movie was amazing, but the music on this soundtrack, both musically and lyrically is incredible. Whenever I hear the song “Where are you going” by the Dave Matthews Band, I will always think of my son when he was a toddler and I would wonder how his life will turn out and how I’ll always want to be there for him. Then there is “Fix you” by Cold Play, this one kills me. When my Putter kitty wasn’t doing well it reminded me of how I wished I could Fix him and then after he passed, this song and it’s lyrics took on a whole new meaning to me. Or on a happier note, the song “Circle of Friends” by Edie Brickell. My group of girls from High School used to sing this one out loud together.
I could go on and on and we’d be here all week, really!
What I’m listening to mostly lately:
Mumford and Sons
Flogging Molly
Kings of Leon
U2 (always)
Silversun Pick-ups
and others.
I’d love to hear stories about how music moves you!

I was obsessed with U2 in high school and college. And then post-college, I was really into Pearl Jam. I have to admit that these days, I don’t listen to the lyrics nearly as much. My husband always chastises me for that. I just like if I can sing along.
